South Tyrol: a land of castles and manor houses

Thanks to its strategic position as a historic crossroads between northern and southern Europe, South Tyrol is home to one of the highest concentrations of castles in Europe. More than 400 historic residences—including castles, fortresses, manor houses, and ruins—once served as centres of power, defence, and administration. Today, these remarkable landmarks grace mountain slopes and valley landscapes, captivating visitors while bearing witness to the region’s rich and eventful past. Over recent decades, many of these centuries-old buildings have been carefully restored. Some have been transformed into museums and cultural attractions, making their history accessible to a wider public. Today, many of these sites can be visited comfortably by families with pushchairs, older visitors, and people with disabilities.
