This leisurely hike from Lago Obersee at Passo Stalle to the idyllically situated Staller Alm is ideal for families with young children on foot and seniors. The route leads through picturesque mountain scenery, offering beautiful views and several opportunities to stop and enjoy a short break along the way.

The approximately 2 km (one-way) hike from Lago Obersee at Passo Stalle (2.016 m) to Staller Alm (1.950 m) takes around 45 minutes when hiking with children. The trail is well maintained and involves only minimal elevation change. However, parts of the hiking trail are narrow and include steeper sections, wheel ruts, and stony terrain; therefore, it is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs.

Accessibility

By car: Drive through the Anterselva Valley up to Passo Stalle (Austria), where you can park below the pass height at the second car park (at the end of the lake).
Please pay attention to the traffic lights towards Passo Stalle: due to the narrow pass road, traffic is regulated by traffic lights:

  • From East Tyrol (Defereggen Valley) towards South Tyrol (Anterselva): from minute 01 to minute 15 of every hour.
  • From South Tyrol (Anterselva) towards East Tyrol (Defereggen Valley): from minute 30 to minute 45 of every hour.

By public transport (2 Lakes Shuttle - accessible):
Bus stops are located at the Anterselva Biathlon Centre, at Ristorante & Café Platzl am See (Lago di Anterselva), and at Ristorante Alpengasthaus Obersee at Passo Stalle.

Description

The starting point of this sunny alpine hike is the second parking area at Lago Obersee on Passo Stalle (parking area at the end of the lake). From the car park, follow the wide footpath with its firm gravel surface down towards the lakeshore. Cross the lake's outflow via the wooden footbridge and immediately afterwards turn right towards Staller Alm (Ausserweger Hut – Hinterpassler Hut).

The family-friendly hiking trail continues pleasantly through unspoilt nature. Along the route, a few benches invite you to pause and enjoy the magnificent mountain scenery. At two points, short wooden bridges allow you to cross two small streams safely.

After a leisurely walk, you will reach Staller Alm (Ausserweger Hut – Hinterpassler Hut). The cosy mountain huts in their sunny location are the perfect place to enjoy a well-earned break. Access to the two alpine inns is not barrier-free, and the toilets are not wheelchair accessible. For children, there is a playground directly next to the huts.

The return hike follows the same route back to the panoramic circular trail around Lago Obersee at Passo Stalle.
