Circular walk around the Sommersürs biotope
A walk to the Sommersürs biotope is a must during any stay on the Natz-Schabs apple plateau. Small yet diverse, the Sommersürs biotope, also known as Samesirs, lies in a hollow between the villages of Natz and Viums. Covering just over 2 hectares, the biotope is an invaluable refuge for countless aquatic insects, amphibians, reptiles and waterbirds. Cattails, giant sedges and bog bean also thrive on the shallow lake shore.
Accessibility
On the A22 Brenner motorway, take the Brixen-Pustertal exit and head towards Pustertal; after about 1 km, turn right towards Natz-Schabs and park at the village exit by the clubhouse.
Description
Our Sommersürs circular walk begins in the centre of Natz at the Haus der Vereine, where there is a public car park and a bus stop at the entrance to the village. From the car park, a barrier-free footpath leads us initially for around 250 m out of the village to the junction with the Apfelweg (information board), which takes us along a wide, gravel-surfaced track to the Sommersürs biotope. Passing the picturesque biotope, we soon reach the hamlet of Viums, which we cross via St. Magdalena Street (mostly a tarmac footpath), and arrive at the junction for Frun on the left-hand side. The branching access road has a steady gradient of 11.5% on the section that follows. In Frun, a partly bumpy forest path leads into a beautiful pine forest. On the right-hand side, we finally catch sight of the Tölzl Moor nature reserve and shortly afterwards reach the Frun leisure area: the playground, barbecue area and seating are accessible with assistance. The final section of our walk takes us through apple orchards back to our starting point at the Haus der Vereine in Natz.
