The Schwemmalm hiking area is situated in the Ulten Valley near Merano and captivates visitors with its unspoilt mountain landscape featuring historic farmsteads, surrounded by beautiful alpine meadows and coniferous forests. The Waldbrunnenweg family hike is also suitable for families with young children and pushchairs. Along this sun-drenched route, there are numerous places to rest, with comfortable benches and natural drinking fountains.

Accessibility

From Bolzano, take the MeBo motorway towards Merano (Merano South exit) and continue via Lana into the Ulten Valley. Passing St. Pankraz and St. Walburg, we reach the large visitor car park for the Schwemmalm mountain railways at Kuppelwies.
Public transport:
There are regular bus services to Kuppelwies in the Ulten Valley from Merano railway station and Lana bus station. The buses currently in service are not yet wheelchair accessible.

Description

We park at the large visitor car park in Kuppelwies and take the accessible Schwemmalm cable car from the reservoir (1,150 m) up to the Schwemmalm mountain station (2,162 m).
Following a wide track with a bumpy surface, we reach the slightly lower-lying Außerschwemm mountain hut in just a few minutes’ walk (refreshments available with a children’s playground; access to the terrace via a single step). From here, the footpath winds gently up and down along the sun-drenched mountainside. The wide, gravel-surfaced footpath is suitable for pushchairs, whilst wheelchair users will quickly reach their limits shortly after the Außerschwemm Alm (steep gradient, cross-slope, gravel surface). Along the path there are several wooden tables with seating. Traditional field names and local features are explained on small information boards. At almost regular intervals, you also pass natural drinking fountains, which invite you to take a short break. About halfway along the route, we finally reach a fork and turn left, following the fairly steep path (trail marker 13B) down into a sparse larch forest. From here, however, the trail climbs steadily again and leads us to the nearby Innerschwemm Alm (refreshments available, children’s swing). From the Alm, a wide, gravel-surfaced track (gradient >20% in places) leads back to our starting point at the mountain station (please note operating hours).
