Forest walk at the foot of the Rosskopf
The trail runs along the foot of the Rosskopf on a forest track leading to the Vallming Valley. After an initial gentle climb, the trail runs almost flat through cool spruce forests, offering beautiful views of the Sterzing Basin, the Eisack Valley and the mountain peaks of the Pflersch Valley.
Accessibility
From the Brenner A22 motorway, take the Sterzing exit and follow the signs towards Gossensass/Brenner Pass. Shortly after Sterzing, turn left onto the road to Tschöfs just past the Rosskopf cable car valley station. We follow the signs to Flans. Just before the turn-off to Flans, a forest track with a natural surface begins on the left. We continue along this track to the first hairpin bend, where we park (limited parking spaces).
Description
We park in a meadow at the edge of the hairpin bend (1,370 m) and follow the forest track, which climbs at a steady gradient (12%). The climb offers a magnificent view of the Sterzing valley basin and the neighbouring Pflersch Valley. After around 400 metres, we reach a junction where we turn sharply right and enter the forest via a gentle climb. The forest track, with its natural surface and gravel, is often bumpy and stony here. About a third of the way into the hike, we also come across a forest barrier, which is locked and can only be passed with great difficulty. The path runs through a cool spruce forest, shaded and almost flat, to a small wooden hut and on to two successive former quarries (1,466 m).
The forest track forks here: we keep to the right and follow the track slightly downhill, which offers us a few brief glimpses of the Tribulaun and the Feuerstein Glacier. We pass the two turnings down to Gossensaß and up to the Rosskopf and finally reach Kalkofen, at the entrance to the Vallmingtal (signpost no. 19/A), where we come across some old wall remains on the right. From here, the path climbs very steeply up to the alpine pastures, which is why we end our hike at this point and return to our starting point.
