Despite extensive human intervention in the Falschauer river delta, this water-rich area is still regarded today as a true gem of nature. It provides a refuge for numerous species of wildlife, particularly waterbirds. Along the route, we come across an interesting sculpture trail, showcasing the individual artistic expressions of artists from all over the world who have engaged with the landscape and its diversity.

Accessibility

From Bolzano, take the MeBo expressway to Lana, where we park in the industrial estate near the Lanarena sports centre (two reserved parking spaces for people with disabilities).

Description

At the car park, we cross the main road to Lana (250 m). After crossing a small bridge, we reach a signpost for the Falschauer Biotope after a few metres and turn onto the narrow nature trail. Partly uphill and partly downhill (gradients of 9%), the path winds its way through a sparse deciduous and scrub forest with increasing areas of marshland. A number of information boards along the route provide details about the unique flora and fauna of the biotope, which serves as an ideal habitat for numerous plant species of the Adige Valley. To this day, this area remains an important resting place for waterbirds that stop here during the migration season. The nature trail continues straight ahead, winding steadily through the natural surroundings. At a fork in the path, we keep to the left. The vegetation thins out and we eventually reach a small, idyllic pond surrounded by numerous rest areas with seating and tables. Here, we can relax and watch the birds and fish by and in the water. We leave the pond behind us and, after a short climb with a gradient of 8–10%, we reach a viewing platform in the form of a suspended footbridge (260 m), which symbolises the dialogue between technology and nature. From here, you can enjoy a beautiful view over the entire floodplain. The bridge is part of the Lana Sculpture Trail, which explores the theme of landscape through art. Continuing straight ahead, we come back to the previous fork in the path and return to our starting point along the same route. Those wishing to extend the walk can continue along the river to the centre of Lana (320 m). This section of the route is also partly tarmac. From the village, we return to our starting point at the Lanarena.
