Once the summer residence of Empress Elisabeth of Austria (“Sissi”), Trauttmansdorff Castle is now home to the Touriseum, the Provincial Museum of Tourism, the only museum in the entire Alpine region specialising in the history of tourism. The Touriseum, surrounded by the spectacular botanical garden of Trauttmansdorff Castle, offers a fascinating journey through time to discover Tyrol’s two hundred years of tourism tradition, via an exhibition enriched with illustrated panels. Visitors can experience the atmosphere of the time from the perspective of both holidaymakers and the local population.

Rating: High

The Provincial Museum of Tourism is housed within the historic walls of Trauttmansdorff Castle and has several large visitor car parks (with reserved spaces for people with disabilities and an accessible bus stop for line 4 at the main entrance). In the entrance area, there is a wheelchair hire service offering both manual and electric wheelchairs, which can be borrowed free of charge on request. Four modern lifts provide access to the castle and the museum tour. Electric lifts are installed on the internal staircases. There is an accessible toilet on every floor.
Admission also includes a visit to the gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle. Admission is free for companions of wheelchair users and blind visitors. Telephone booking for wheelchair hire: +39 0473 258 819.

Notes: Level +1: A fun experience for young and old alike, and also the world’s largest tourism pinball machine! A light-hearted game and a tongue-in-cheek journey through the world of tourism and the clichés of South Tyrol. Players use switches to guide a ball through this holiday paradise, past moving scenes and lots of amusing details. A Val Gardena artist has carved the ten-metre-long “tourism pinball machine” from Swiss stone pine

Notes: Museum tour, Level +2: The castle’s most beautiful rooms are located on the second floor, featuring tiled stoves, panelling and frescoes that are well worth seeing. These rooms also house the study collection, which includes hundreds of posters, silver cutlery, dining and postcards, as well as souvenirs. Unfortunately, due to steps, only three rooms are accessible to visitors with reduced mobility (see photos 5, 6 and 9). This level also features the magnificent Deustersaal, which is accessible via a stairlift, and a multimedia area with 12 easy-to-use stations that describe all the museum’s exhibits. Numerous historical films, interviews and statistics on tourism can also be accessed.
