The Museum am Sandhof in Passeier, the birthplace of Andreas Hofer, tells the story in a lively and entertaining way of how the bearded innkeeper and cattle dealer became a Tyrolean folk hero. The permanent exhibition “Heroes & Us” draws a connection – not so far-fetched after all – to heroes of the modern age. The thread that unites these diverse figures is the question: why do we actually need heroes? In the outdoor area stands a typical Passeier farmstead. The exhibition “Miër Psairer” offers a crash course in the Passeier dialect and provides insights into the character of the Passeier people. The Jaufenburg, the French Cemetery and the Pfistrad Alpine Museum are integrated into the museum concept as satellite sites.

Rating: Very high

The Sandhof has a large visitor car park with a gravel surface. There is also a bus stop for the SAD Passeiertal line right next to the museum. The external access path to the entrance consists partly of gravel and compacted earth. The museum tour on the ground floor is completely accessible. A modern lifting platform (135 x 90 cm) also provides access to the folklore section and the seminar room on the first floor. A short ramp leads to the adjacent open-air museum. The open-air site is only partially accessible to visitors with reduced mobility and requires assistance. The museum has a barrier-free toilet on the ground floor. The dining terrace of the Sandhof restaurant is also accessible without steps via an external access path.

Notes: The car park and access path are covered in gravel and compacted earth. There is also a bus stop for the SAD Passeiertal line right next to the museum.

Notes: The museum tour begins with a film. Following this, the Passeier Museum presents its new permanent exhibition, ‘Heroes & Hofer’, in a vividly staged display: Visitors gain a better understanding of the actions and thinking of the various sides; the narrow, patriotic view of “good Tyroleans – evil enemies” is dismantled, and Andreas Hofer and the events of 1809 are placed within a broader European context. The overarching theme of “Heroes” also broadens the narrow perspective on Tyrol.

Notes: From the cinema, visitors are transported straight into the events of the 1809 rebellion. The expanded permanent exhibition presents the events of 200 years ago from an unusual perspective: an outside view of Tyrol in Hofer’s time. In the entrance area, the ‘Sandhof as a place of pilgrimage’ and the history of its reception are discussed. In this revised perspective, Hofer is put into context and freed from exaggerated patriotism and blind hero worship.

Notes: The expanded permanent exhibition presents the events of 200 years ago from an unusual perspective: an outside view of Tyrol during Hofer’s time. The entrance area explores the ‘Sandhof as a place of pilgrimage’ and the history of its reception. This fresh perspective puts Hofer into context and frees him from exaggerated patriotism and blind hero worship. In the museum area, there is an 8-metre-long ramp with a 5% gradient.

Notes: Folklore section and seminar room: This part of the museum is located on the +1 level and is easily accessible via a lifting platform: The old Passeier region existed well into the 20th century. It was a rugged settlement area characterised by mountain farming. The barren soil could only sustain the population through intensive and resourceful cultivation. Around 1960, much changed. Infrastructure development, machinery, jobs in crafts and industry, and the emergence of tourism transformed the valley permanently. With the new era, living conditions changed. Traditional working methods, buildings and ways of life gradually disappeared. Old relics became antiques or fell into disrepair. The expanded collections of the St. Martin Local History Museum were transferred to the Passeier Museum in 2001 and tell the story of old Passeier without nostalgic embellishment.

Notes: Open-air area: The open-air area is only partially accessible to visitors with reduced mobility, and only with assistance. The authentic living conditions on the mountain farms of the Passeier Valley are best conveyed in the open-air area through original buildings from the valley that have been lovingly reconstructed and furnished. The predominant building material of wood, crafted in the traditional style, the low-ceilinged rooms, the small windows, the sounds and smells: a journey back in time to a bygone world that is not so very far behind us.
