The rural building on the north-western side of the abbey has recently been renovated and converted into a museum. The 300 m² of exhibition space displays historical documents and artistic treasures that illustrate the Rule of St Benedict, depict the daily life of the monks in the abbey, and recount its 900-year history.  The film on the depictions of angels is particularly evocative. Before your visit, we recommend checking the opening hours and guided tour times on the conference website. The ‘Klostercafe’ has step-free access and a disabled-friendly toilet (more information on the Klostercafe here).

Rating: High

Montemaria Abbey can be reached from the car park (which has two spaces reserved for disabled visitors) by following a sloping path (12–13% gradient, approximately 250 metres long) that leads into the convent’s inner courtyard (visitors with severe mobility difficulties can drive right up to the convent walls). The former rural building, served by a spacious lift (145x130 cm), houses several exhibition halls and rooms reserved for events. The preservation of the ancient walls creates an interesting contrast between the historic structure and the modern furnishings. The museum has an accessible toilet. The ancient Baroque church has a ramp not yet featured on our website, whilst the crypt is inaccessible due to a flight of stairs.
